Graag nodigen we je uit voor Black Achievement Month Zuidas 2024 op dinsdag 22 oktober. Na twee succesvolle eerdere edities komt dit keer de bijzondere voorstelling: 'Duizend aanslagen op de Obama's' door Raymi Sambo Maakt naar VU Griffioen. Met oog op de komende Amerikaanse verkiezingen in november is dit zeker een actueel thema.

We ontvangen je graag vanaf 17:30 voor een American walking dinner. De voorstelling begint om 19:00. Na de voorstelling is er mogelijkheid om na te praten met een drankje. BAM Zuidas 2024 is een samenwerking van VU Griffioen, Rialto VU, Black Achievement Month & Hello Zuidas.

Over de voorstelling

Acht jaar na hun vertrek uit het Witte Huis zoeken Barack en Michelle Obama naar hun plek in de samenleving. Michelle is een bestseller auteur en een van de invloedrijkste Amerikanen van dit moment. Barack reist over de hele wereld om lezingen te geven en campagnes te voeren. Maar in een wereld van extremisme en centrumrechts denken neemt hun relevantie en invloed af.

In Duizend aanslagen op de Obama's wordt een biopic gemaakt van het echtpaar tijdens pittige relatietherapiesessies. Het moet een meeslepend verhaal worden over de periode in het Witte Huis waar ze zich nooit echt thuis voelden. Een periode waarin ze continu concessies moesten doen en vrijwel nooit voldeden aan de verwachtingen van met name de zwarte gemeenschap.

Hebben ze hun eigen identiteit ontkend voor het grotere plaatje?

We would like to invite you to Black Achievement Month Zuidas 2024 on October 22. After two successful previous editions, this time we present the film: 'Southside with You' by Richard Tanne at Rialto VU. With the upcoming American elections in November, this is certainly a timely topic. There will be a special intro by artist Kenneth Aidoo.

We welcome you from 5:30 PM for an American walking dinner. The film starts at 7:00 PM. After the show, there will be an opportunity to discuss it over drinks. BAM Zuidas 2024 is a collaboration between VU Griffioen, Rialto VU, Black Achievement Month & Hello Zuidas.

About the film

Harvard Law School student Barack Obama, while working as a summer associate at a Chicago law firm in 1989, arranges to meet Michelle Robinson, a young lawyer and his supervisor at the firm ostensibly to go to a community organizing meeting. However, when they meet in the morning, he tells her that the meeting is at 4 pm and he wants to fill the time till then getting to know each other. She is initially apprehensive because they work together, but agrees.

Kenneth Aidoo is a fine artist and a graduate of the Gerrit Rietveld Academy (2019) and he has also studied film at the Nederlandse Filmacademie in Amsterdam (2015). Aidoo works across different disciplines engaging in the conversation of the position of people of African descent. By making video-installations on the African diaspora and thus engaging in the heritage of a shared history. In the portraits of his paintings the forgotten narratives of the African is being made present where the erasure of history is cannot be neglected but displayed to see the presence of Africans throughout history. Aidoo has exhibited nationally and an international show in Antwerp, Belgium. A solo at Amsterdam Art Island with Marian van Zijl-Langhout (2023). Selected group exhibitions include the. GROUPSHOW (2023) CBK Zuidoost (2023) and the ABN AMRO (2022). He has been nominated for the Royal Award for Modern Painting in 2021 and being one of the three winners in 2022. His work is held in private collections and public collection.
